- A Christian Moor and general of armies in Venice, respected by all those around him. His skill as a soldier is valued and greatly demanded by the duke and senate.
- Othello seems to draw people because of his qualities, as proved when he won over Desdemona.
And I loved her, that she did pity them.
This is the only witchcraft I have used (I.iii.166-168)
- He is insecure because of his age, speech and colour. Othello is isolated from the Venetian society. He looks into his military ways to gain acceptance.
Haply for I am black,
And have not those soft parts of conversation
That chambers have; or for I am declined
Into the vale of years (III.iii.267-279)
- Othello can be characterized as a round character in the English literature for in the beginning of the play, he was a noble man. However, much changed at the end of the play when he was told that his wife was cheating on him. Othello changed into an irrational and violent husband.
- Othello seems strong, but instead he is weak. When he was told of Desdemona's apparent infidelity, Othello was swept over with jealousy. He was unable to sleep, think properly and started to have seizures. It seems that this General is only good at controlling other people. His emotions is what controls him.
- Othello has a very poor judgment for he trusted Iago. He at first demanded proof of Desdemona's infidelity but after Iago's accusations, Othello accepted all the information given to him and acted upon his emotions.
- Othello has a very strong Christian views. When he was told that Desdemona is cheating on him, he believes that in order to save her from her sins and to stop her from ever sinning again, he has to kill her.
- By the end of the play, Othello continued to be himself by telling Lodovico to tell the world not only about his failures but also of the great deeds he had done for Venice. Othello started as a noble man and died a noble man.
